More Information
I have 25 years experience in financial, tax, compliance and regulatory matters. Advising entrepreneurs, start-ups, professional service firms, small businesses, and their boards on applicable laws and regulations, and how they can be used to achieve financial
and business goals, within the confines of regulatory compliance best practices, is the focus of my practice. Previous experience includes working at the U.S. Department of Justice, Tax Division,
in Washington, D.C., representing the IRS and trying tax cases. In private practice, I have represented clients in various industries and occupations. Analyzing tax credits, blockchain financial transactions including virtual currencies and electronic payment systems, defending audits & collections by state, IRS & Department of Labor, negotiating agreements/settlements, appealing agency decisions, seeking refunds, investigating/ensuring regulatory compliance, developing best corporate practices, sale/succession planning, creating 501(c)(3)'s, mediating internal or external disputes: these are a few of the varied matters I handle.
I am available for consultations about compliance, reporting and tax consequences of a variety of transactions, including: blockchain- based transactions, virtual currencies, entity/funding options, sales/mergers, SaaS business models, independent contractors, immigration/withholding, severance agreements, tax dischargeability bankruptcy analysis, disputing IRS penalties, and litigation hazards analysis.

As a Certified Mediator, I also provide discreet mediation advice and mediation services. Some of the matters I am available for mediation include partnership and shareholder disagreements, co-founder clashes, conflicts among family beneficiaries in trusts and estates matters, contractual breaches, employer-independent contractor arrangements, family business misunderstandings, and tax disputes and related negotiations.

IIn addition to the articles I have authored, I am also a published author of four books: Federal Tax Litigation (Law Journal Press) which she is responsible for updating twice-a-year, Personal Finance for Professionals (2d ed. ABA 2014); The Lawyer’s Retirement Planning Guide (2d ed. ABA 2014), and “The Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act: From Legislation to Implementation to Litigation (ABA 2011)(co-author). A contributing columnist to the American Bar Association Journal Magazine, in 2014, I received a Bronze medal from the American Society of Business Press Editors for my writing. I have been included in The Business Journal of Kansas City’s annual “Best of the Bar” publication from 2005 to the present, and I have been honored to be a past recipient of an Outstanding Service Award from the KBA in 2016. Coinciding with the topics in my books and articles, I enjoy speaking at legal and professional association conferences. I also counsel other authors concerning royalties and contractual matters.

Among the professional associations and civic organizations in which I am active, I have held leadership duties and roles in Kansas as follows: Trustee on the Board of Trustees for the Kansas Bar Foundation, Advisory Board member for the KBA Law Practice Management Committee, KBA Annual Meeting CLE Program Planning Conference Chair, and KBA Diversity Committee member. Finally, I am also a Past President of the Kansas Women Attorneys Association, and a member of the Association of Women Lawyers in Kansas City.
