LOMAP Tip of the Week

Disaster Planning 101: File Storage and Backup

An essential part of your disaster planning should include a plan for backing up your client files and other important office records. With the many options available to you ranging from simple items like encrypted thumb drives to offsite storage locations to cloud storage, you should develop and implement a policy for routine backup and retention of all electronic and hard copy records. For your hard copy documents, you should ensure they are scanned and stored electronically or another hard copy is stored offsite. When picking an offsite location, make sure that the distance between your offsite location and your office location are far enough away from one other in case a disaster hits your area. If you are located right around the corner from one another, that really defeats the purpose of what you are trying to accomplish. If you are considering cloud storage, there are many different options out there for you such as Mozy and Carbonite, just to name a few. When choosing your cloud storage provider, just make sure you do your homework regarding security and who has access to your data. For more information regarding backing up your data, read Preparing for a Disaster: Data Backup and Beyond by Joshua Poje which was featured in the ABA’s Law Practice Today Webzine.
