Kansas Schools Getting Ready for Kansas Bar Association YLS Mock
Trial Competition

(January 31, 2007) Topeka, KS—While the nation prepares for the culmination of the professional football season, another “Super Bowl” of sorts is gearing up with this year’s 2007 Annual Mock Trial Competition sponsored by the Kansas Bar Association’s Young Lawyers Section and presented by the law firm Shook, Hardy & Bacon LLP.

Regional tournaments will be held Saturday, Feb. 24 at the Johnson and Sedgwick County courthouses. The state tournament will be Saturday, Mar. 31, in Wichita. The winner of the state tournament will travel to compete at the national competition from May 10-12 in Dallas, TX.

Mock trial rules, registration, and case materials can be accessed on the KBA Web site at http://www.ksbar.org/public/mocktrial.shtml. The 2007 mock trial case is “Hamilton v. Sadler.” Deadline to register is Monday, Feb. 12.

Mock trials have proven to be an effective and popular part of the comprehensive, law-focused program designed to provide young people with an operational understanding of the law, legal issues, and the judicial process. The mock trial program improves proficiency in basic skills: listening, reading, and reasoning; promotes better communication and cooperation between the educational and legal communities; provides a competitive event in an academic atmosphere; and promotes cooperation among young people of various abilities and interests.

“The Shook, Hardy and Bacon Mock Trial program allows high school students to gain working knowledge of trial preparation and strategy,” said Chelsey Langland, KBA Mock Trial Coordinator and Research Attorney to Kansas Appellate Court Judge Christel Marquardt. “The public speaking skills these students hone will serve them well as they enter adulthood, while they also get an in-depth view of how the legal system works.”

“I think people are consistently surprised by the depth of talent we have in our tournament.”
