The KBA Provides Free Video to Encourage Students to Consider Legal Careers

(November 17, 2003) Topeka, KS—The Kansas Bar Association (KBA) has produced a video entitled "Practicing Law in Kansas" to help encourage students to consider legal careers. The video, which was funded by the Kansas Bar Foundation, is a collection of Kansas attorneys who shared their experiences and thoughts on practicing law and their roles as attorneys in the social fabric of the state. The interview segments are woven together with narration by Bill Curtis, a native Kansan who produces television programs for the A&E network, including "American Justice."

The idea for the video, which was several years in the making, arose when the KBA established a task force to respond to a growing concern within the legal profession that students were entering law school with an incomplete understanding of the rewards and responsibilities associated with a legal career. The task force's broad purpose was to assist students seeking information about careers as attorneys. At the same time, they wanted to impress upon students the ideals of the legal profession and how these ideals interact with the economics and day-to-day realities of practicing law.

This video is free of charge to counselors and teachers. To receive a complimentary copy, call the Kansas Bar Association at (785) 234-5696. Also available is a "Practicing Law in Kansas" guide that will help facilitate the discussion. The guide expands upon some of the issues raised in the video and provides relevant statistics relating to salaries, employment opportunities, and average hours worked.
