Kansas Specialty Courts Survey

The Kansas Specialty Courts Commission asks for feedback on specialty courts in Kansas. In March 2013, the Kansas Supreme Court established the Specialty Courts Commission and appointed Judge Steve Leben, of the Kansas Court of Appeals, as chairperson. Supreme Court Order No. 2013 SC 14, which appoints the Commission members and outlines its duties, can be found on the Kansas Judicial Branch website at http://www.kscourts.org/kansas-courts/supreme-court/orders/2013/2013SC14.pdf.

The duties of the Commission include:

  1. Study the status of specialty courts in Kansas;
  2. suggest procedures for judicial districts to consider in the establishment of specialty courts; and
  3. consider whether statewide guidelines or standards for specialty courts should be established and if so, develop recommendations for such.

Specialty courts generally use problem-solving methods to address the underlying problems that bring litigants to court. These problem-solving methods may include the integration of treatment or other services with judicial case processing, ongoing judicial monitoring, and a collaborative, less adversarial court process.

Currently, a majority of the specialty or problem-solving courts in Kansas are drug courts. Other examples of specialty courts are DUI courts, mental health courts, domestic violence courts, veterans’ courts, and truancy courts.

It should take approximately five minutes to complete the survey, which may be found at http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/2013SpecialtyCourtSurvey. Please respond by Friday, November 22. If you have questions, please contact Lana Walsh at (785) 296-3059 or email at walshl@kscourts.org.
