State High School Mock Trial

On March 1, 2014, the Young Lawyers Section hosted two regional tournaments for High School Mock Trial teams. A total of 27 teams competed from 19 different schools. Of those teams, 19 were eligible to advance to State as part of the varsity division. After all rounds of competition, six teams advanced to the state tournament. Congratulations to the following schools:
  • Blue Valley Northwest
  • Shawnee Mission East
  • Washburn Rural
  • Sunrise Christian Academy
  • The Independent School
  • Northeast Magnet High School
These schools will compete at the State Championship on March 28-29, 2014, in Topeka. The winner will advance to Nationals, which are being held in Madison, Wis., this May. We are still seeking individuals to act as judges during the State Championship. Save the Date: Ethics for Good XV

Now in its 15th year, Ethics for Good will be held June 20 at the Polsky Theatre, JCCC Carlsen Center, in Overland Park and June 26 at The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Atkins Auditorium, in Kansas City, Mo. Register online for either the Overland Park or Kansas City programs.

 

5th Annual KALAP Spring Seminar

The Kansas Lawyers Assistance Program will be presenting their 5th annual spring seminar on April 4, 2014, at the Ramada Inn in Topeka. This year’s event will include such topics as aging issues for attorneys, co-dependence, and attorney discipline as it relates to aging and impairments. As always, the KALAP Annual Seminar offers a FREE LUNCH and FREE CLE. This event is usually offered to KALAP volunteers, but this year it will be open to all Kansas attorneys; although space will be limited. The accelerating decline in professionalism has been the subject of increasing concern to the law profession for many years. In particular, bad behavior in depositions has increased, and courts have reacted by imposing appropriate sanctions. This 1-hour ethics presentation will highlight cases involving bad behavior in depositions and the courts’ use of ethics rules and professionalism codes to address such bad behavior.
