Supreme Court Nominating Commission Election 2017
Deadline for casting ballot is May 15, 2017
I appreciate this opportunity to introduce myself and ask for your vote. I have devoted my career to promoting access to justice for individuals who cannot afford an attorney and in doing so have grown to appreciate the importance of a strong and independent judiciary. A proud graduate of the University of Kansas School of Law, I began my legal career in 1984 as a Research Attorney for the Missouri Court of Appeals. Then, after leaving the Court, I spent almost twenty years working as a public defender in Missouri and Kansas. While in the appellate public defender office, I briefed and argued dozens of cases in the Kansas Court of Appeals and about twenty-five cases before the Kansas Supreme Court. For the last nine years I have worked with the Disability Rights Center of Kansas, a federally-funded non-profit agency devoted to advocating for individuals with disabilities in such diverse areas as employment, housing, and accessibility. During this time, I have continued to represent individuals in the Kansas appellate courts. I have a profound respect for the role of the Kansas Supreme Court in shaping our profession, safeguarding our civil liberties, and acting as a restraint on the legislative and executive branches of government. At this critical juncture when there are threats to the independence and impartiality of the Kansas Supreme Court and its Justices, I believe the process of choosing future members of the Court assumes ever greater importance. If selected, I would devote my efforts to promoting the selection of highly qualified, learned, and experienced justices for our highest court. Please cast your ballot for me for Chair of the Supreme Court Nominating Commission, by May 15, 2017.
