In an effort to address the growing need for pro bono representation, the Kansas Bar Association and Kansas Legal Services are teaming up to host a special event focused ongrowingthe number of and better coordination among all pro bono providers in Kansas. The "Pro Bono Summit: Partnerships in the Public Interest” will be held from 2-5 p.m. on Dec. 17 at the Kansas Bar Association in Topeka. The keynote speaker for this event is Justice Dan Biles of the Kansas Supreme Court.

The KBA and KLS will bring together attorneys, judges, law firm pro bono coordinators, committee and university pro bono chairs, law students and others interested in participating in a forum and reception to address the pro bono need in Kansas and to celebrate those that have volunteered to help meet that need. Summit topics includewhat a broad pro bono partnership program in Kansas can accomplish, new issues and programs in pro bono, and the benefits gained by individual attorneys and firms providing pro bono.

A majority of pro bono cases in Kansas are coordinated by KLS. "For the first eight and a half months of 2014, pro bono attorneys have provided advice to 271 low-income Kansans,” said Marilyn M. Harp, KLS executive director. "Pro bono attorneys have opened 63 cases and completed 60 cases.”

The need, however, far outweighs the volunteers available to fill the need. Harp said that in one month alone, KLS had applications from 65 people who would have been eligible for a pro bono attorney -- had one been available.

The KBA and KLShope to expand an understanding of current pro bono activities in Kansas and to start a discussion about how all providers can work together to share resources and ideas to address the ongoing and increasing need.
