KBA YLS Mock Trial Competition Judges/Volunteers
Share |

Inviting judges, attorneys, law students and other members of the legal community to take part in the mock trial program bridges the gap between the simulated activity and reality and provides an opportunity for legal professionals to share their knowledge and experience with the future lawyers of Kansas. If you are interested in judging a competition or volunteering to coach a program, please contact us here.

What does a coach/mentor do?

As a mentor, you will work directly with a team to advise and assist the students in understanding and preparing their cases and perhaps even practicing with them before competition. There is no set schedule or commitment expected for this, but a few meaningful contacts with the students to advise them during case preparation and in trial preparation is anticipated. We will connect you with a coach in your area and you would coordinate directly with that individual about scheduling. Mentorship would be anticipated leading up to competition: December through February (depending on the team’s schedule), but can be more involved including joining the team at competition and assisting the team should it advance to State and Nationals.

As a judge, you will score the rounds of competition at either the regional competition or the state competition. Each round has one presiding judge and at least two scoring judges who sit as jurors. Details about the case and the rules will be made available to you in advance of the competition in order to orient you to the world of high school mock trial. Judges will be needed in Johnson County and Sedgwick County on February 28, 2015. Judges will be needed for the State Competition in Topeka on March 27-28, 2015.

Thank you in advance for your interest and assistance in making this program exceptional for the students, and for advancing a greater understanding and affinity for the law in Kansas.
