What happens when I call the KBA Lawyer Referral Service?

When you call the KBA Lawyer Referral Service you will speak with a Referral Representative who is experienced in analyzing potential legal problems like yours. LRS Referral Representatives are not attorneys, but they are trained to help you decide if you need one, or if other assistance is appropriate. If a lawyer’s advice is recommended, your Referral Representative will provide you with the contact information for an attorney who has agreed to talk with you, usually within two working days.

Our staff will consider your specific legal problem as well as your location in order to make the most appropriate and convenient referral possible.

To enable our staff to provide the proper assistance please be prepared to explain your legal problem. You will be referred to an attorney who has met established standards of professional experience in the area, or areas, of law that relate to your legal matter. An initial consultation with an attorney will be arranged for you, but you are under no obligation to retain ther attorney to whom you are referred.

You may also wish to use our Ask-A-Lawyer advice and information service for $2/min. not to exceed $50.

Our Referral Representatives are available between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. each weekday at 1-800-928-3111 or at kanconnect@ksbar.org. All communication is held in strictest confidence.

Do I really need a lawyer?

Last year approximately 85-90% of the 18,000 individuals and businesses who contacted the KBA Lawyer Referral Service did not need to see an attorney. Instead they were referred to a lawyer on the Ask-A-Lawyer advice and information service, at a charge of $2/min not to exceed $50, or were referred to one of many community organizations or governmental agencies with which KBA Lawyer Referral Service collaborates.

Will I get a qualified, experienced attorney?

All KBA Lawyer Referral Service attorneys have been carefully screened for experience and other qualifications. On average, LRS attorneys have been practicing law for twenty years and are skilled in over one hundred areas of law, including family law, estate planning, landlord-tenant matters, personal injury, and worker’s compensation law.

How much will it cost?

There is no fee charged for a referral to a lawyer who is a part of the KBA Lawyer Referral Service.

The charge for speaking to a lawyer on the Ask-A-Lawyer advice and information service is $2/minute not to exceed $50.

If you decide to hire the referred lawyer you should discuss fees with the attorney during the initial consultation. It is important to understand how the fees are determined and when they will need to be paid.

The attorney will provide a written agreement that states what services will be performed and what the services will cost. In situation when it is impossible to determine the exact fee, the attorney will provide an estimate.

What if I have been in an accident?

If you have been physically injured at work, at home, or in an accident, attorney fees are often dependent on you receiving a settlement or judgment. Usually the attorney’s fee will be based on a percentage of you settlement or judgment.

Cases of legal or medical malpractice are often handled in a manner similar to the above.

What will I need for the initial consultation?

In order to make the most of your first consultation with an attorney you should bring all relevant documents and information.

The names, addresses, and telephone numbers of people involved and documents, such as lease agreements and contracts, will help the attorney understand your particular problem.

What if I cannot afford an attorney?

All attorneys who participate in the KBA Lawyer Referral Service charge attorney fees. Each individual attorney establishes his or her own fee schedule. Some attorneys require retainers (payments made by the client before any work begins) and some attorneys accept payment plan agreements. Some attorneys provide for payment to be made through a combination of a retainer and a payment plan for any fees required beyond the initial retainer. In certain cases such as bankruptcy, personal injury, and medical malpractice matters, a lawyer may only take a fee if you are successful in obtaining a settlement or judgment.
