This program will review social media from the start to the finish in family law practices (presented in a way open to any lawyer no matter the practice area). From the initial client interview, to the gathering of evidence and background information, discovery techniques, and trial evidence to general marketing and ethical considerations. Why is social media important? Who uses social media? How is it used by clients and professionals? What are the risks? What are the benefits? Where do you go to get information?

The accelerating decline in professionalism has been the subject of increasing concern to the law profession for many years. In particular, bad behavior in depositions has increased, and courts have reacted by imposing appropriate sanctions. This 1-hour ethics presentation will highlight cases involving bad behavior in depositions and the courts’ use of ethics rules and professionalism codes to address such bad behavior.

Ronald W. Nelson is a principal of Ronald W. Nelson PA, where he focuses his practice on complex family law issues, with special emphasis on high conflict, interstate and international child custody and support disputes and issues involving special needs families. Mr. Nelson has an extensive appellate practice, having handled over 100 appeals. Mr. Nelson graduated from Washburn University Law School in 1981 (with honors), is admitted to practice before the Kansas Supreme Court, the federal district courts for Kansas and the Western District of Missouri, the Tenth Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals, and the United States Supreme Court. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers and of the International Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers. He served two terms on the American Bar Association Family Law Section Governing Council and three terms as Chair of the KBA Family Law Section. He continues to ser in leadership positions in the ABA Section of Family Law, he serves as Legislative Liaison for the KBA Family Law Section, as a member of the Johnson County (Kansas) Bench-Bar Committee, and the Kansas Judicial Council, Family Law Advisory Committee. Mr. Nelson regularly lectures at national, state and local family law conferences, is a contributing author to the Practitioners Guide to Kansas Family Law, and contributes to national, state, and local publications.

Ashlyn Yarnell is an Associate with Ronald W Nelson PA, in Lenexa, Kansas. Ms. Yarnell graduated from Kansas State University in History and a Minor in Spanish and Leadership, with a Certificate in Conflict Resolution. She received her J.D. from Washburn University School of Law, with a Certificate in Family Law. While at Washburn University School of Law, Ashlyn engaged in Competitive Trial Advocacy Team, where she was a Regional Semifinalist in Denver, Colorado. She received the 2012 Missouri Bar Plan Foundation Scholarship for Ethics and Professionalism, and she is a member of the National Order of Barristers. While at Washburn, Ashlyn was a Washburn Law Admissions Ambassador, Blog Author, Panelist, and Tour Guide. While in law school, Ashlyn served as a Representative–at–Large and as American Bar Association Representative for the Washburn Student Bar Association and as the Vice-President and Events Coordinator for the Washburn Law School Chapter of the Hispanic American Law Student Association.

Suzanne Valdez prior to joining the KU Law faculty in 1999, Suzanne Valdez was an attorney with Kansas Legal Services in Kansas City, Kan. Valdez graduated from the KU School of Law in 1996. She was a member of the Kansas Journal of Law & Public Policy, a research and teaching assistant, a participant in the Legal Aid Clinic, and winner of a Foulston & Siefkin Excellence in Appellate Advocacy Award and the 1996 Walter Hiersteiner Outstanding Service Award. An outstanding teacher, Valdez was the recipient of the 2000 Immel Award for Teaching Excellence and the 2002 Moreau Award for commitment to advising students. Valdez teaches litigation-related courses at the Law School including Practice in Kansas, Pretrial Advocacy, and Deposition Skills Workshop. While serving on the KU Law faculty full time, Valdez also maintains a part-time practice focusing on civil litigation
