This panel will cover a wide range of legal issues facing amateur college athletics.  Discussion will revolve around; sexual misconduct, mistreatment of athletes, racism, antitrust attacks on the amateur model, and student-athletes as employees.

4:50 PM-5:40 PM  Are You an Ethical Attorney Negotiator? A Live Exercise based on the “American Pickers” Show!

Shawn Leisinger, Centers for Excellence Externship Director, Washburn University
This CLE session will blend an initial live negotiation exercise with discussion and application of ethical issues and related rules arising out of that exercise.  The initial exercise is based on the negotiation style and examples found on the “American Pickers” show and seeks to get participants to evaluate their personal negotiation style and how that affected the outcome of the “negotiation” session as compared to other participants.  Participants will be paired off for the first half of the session to negotiate and then a series of questions and related discussion will take the participants through the applicable legal ethical rules.  Participants will be challenged to contemplate whether they feel they complied or may need to adjust their style and negotiation tactics. 

5:45 PM Ticket Holders Travel to Children’s Mercy Park (Formerly Sporting KC Park). Seats are located in Sections 112 and 113. Food and drinks are not included in the ticket price.

Kevin R. Sweeney, Polsinelli, Kansas City, MO
Kevin Sweeney is a strategic partner to many emerging and established companies, assisting in the development and implementation of their business, financial, and legal goals. His particular emphasis is serving as an advisor to the top management of life sciences companies. His understanding and appreciation of the scientific and humanitarian mission of these entities was fostered by early work for entities such as Marion Laboratories, BioTechnica International, and AVAX Technologies. His passion continues to be cultivated by working with numerous entities that advance human health, animal health, plant science, "green" and industrial technologies, and biosafety and homeland security sciences, as well as computer and software technologies. Kevin uses his broad contacts in the national scientific, academic, business, and financial communities to assist companies, universities, and other scientific organizations. In leading complex securities, venture capital, private equity, and merger and acquisition transactions, Kevin coordinates and integrates the efforts of investment and commercial bankers, accountants, and other experts. With extensive experience in the boardroom, Kevin served as a key advisor to the board of directors of numerous public and private companies, advising them on corporate, finance, fiduciary, and SEC issues. He represented independent committees in related-party transactions and investigations of alleged management improprieties, and he advises audit committees, compensation committees, finance committees, and boards of directors.

Corbyn Jones, Shook, Hardy & Bacon, L.L.P., Kansas City, MO
Corby has worked for the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) on various matters, including cases involving student-athlete eligibility, amateurism, student-athlete health and welfare, and civil rights. Additionally, Corby has served as counsel to the NCAA on legislative and governance matters and assisted in the development and implementation of amendments to the Division I enforcement program. Prior to his intercollegiate and amateur sports representation, Corby served as a National Football League Players Association certified contract advisor and negotiated both endorsement and player contracts with NFL teams and apparel and training companies. Corby also has substantial experience defending premises liability, general tort liability and personal injury claims, and representing developers and investors in all phases of acquisition, ownership, operation and disposition of real property. Before earning his law degree, Corby was an NCAA Division I student-athlete at the University of Missouri, where he was an all-conference selection at quarterback, as well as a National Football Foundation National Scholar Athlete. He played professionally in both the NFL and Canadian Football League and was inducted into the University of Missouri – Columbia Intercollegiate Hall of Fame in 2003. Corby has subsequently worked as a college football analyst for the Fox Sports Networks.

Dan Beebe, Dan Beebe Group, Kansas City, MO

Dan Beebe worked in intercollegiate athletics for over 30 years, during which time he was involved in some of college sports most interesting aspects—including conducting investigations of prominent NCAA infractions cases, working in the playoff and bowl post-season football formats, serving on important NCAA committees, and negotiating major television and bowl game deals.  As commissioner of two Division I conferences, Beebe oversaw all aspects of conference governance and operations including legal affairs, marketing, championships, television, media relations and all officiating programs. Having worked with complex organizations and being involved in many cases of misconduct, Beebe formed the Dan Beebe Group to assist institutions and companies prevent identify, and address human relations risks.  Beebe received his bachelor degree from California State Polytechnic University, where he was a captain of the football team, and his law degree from the University of California Hastings College of the Law. 

Shawn Leisinger, Centers for Excellence Externship Director, Washburn University
Shawn Leisinger is the Executive Director of the Centers for Excellence. The Centers are focused in the areas of Advocacy, Business and Transactional Law, Children and Family Law, and Law and Government. Shawn received his Juris Doctorate from Washburn University in 1999.
