Using the Suffix Expander (*) in Search Queries

Casemaker has a suffix expander, which means placing an asterisk (*) after a root word in a search will give a result of words with various endings, including plurals. For example: run* = run, runs, runner, running. However, using this technique to add a prefix results in the error message “prefixes less than 2 characters not allowed in query” (e.g. *judgment did not result in prejudgment). In addition, the suffix expander can render the relevancy of hits less helpful because your results contain variations of equal value in the search, but perhaps not of equal value to you. Make your results more effective by using a comma to separate specific words (a comma indicates “or”). The asterisk is very helpful when you are unsure of spelling — such as woman or women = wom*n.
