Narrowing Search Results Using Minus (-) Sign

You can narrow your search results by including a minus sign (-) followed directly by the word(s) you want to exclude. For example, if you type the words damages “next of kin” “wrongful death” in the Full Document Search Query (using quote marks around “next of kin” and “wrongful death” to ensure you are searching for the exact phrases), you will receive 61 results (see 1 and 2 below). However, if you include the words hit –run at the end of the same search criteria, you will receive six results (see 3 and 4 below). By including the minus sign (-), you are searching for cases that include hit but not hit and run.

  1. Type the words damages “next of kin” “wrongful death” in the Full Document Search Query:
  2. Returns 61 matching documents.
  3. Type the words damages “next of kin” “wrongful death” hit –run in the Full Document Search Query:
  4. Returns six matching documents.
